  1. First of all connect the external display (in this case monitor’s), to the laptop’s external video connection which is at the back of the computer.
  2. Once connected, your laptop which automatically switches to that external display device.
  3. You might be required to hold some keys on the keyboard to switch manually to the external display device (settings may differ). The key sequence may vary for some laptops, but for most of them, it is Fn + F3, F4, F5, F7, F8, F9, or F10.
  4. Pressing the Fn and F9 keys at the same time will switch your display between your laptop’s screen and external display device’s screen.
  5. The F key is usually used to be the CRT/LCD or it may also have a picture of a monitor on or close to the key. But this is dependent on your manufacturer. If this key sequence does not work, please consult your laptop’s technical team.

For Mac users:

  1. For users using laptops having OS X 10.8 and onwards, you may also approach the same way.
  2. If you are still having a problem, connecting your laptop to an external display, then go to your System Preferences and select the displays option.
  3. Now press and hold the option key.
  4. At the bottom right corner of your display screen, you will see a ‘Detect Display’ button.
  5. Click on that, and the OS will be forced to look for an external display.
  6. After that, the external display device will be connected to the laptop.

Some of the laptops can output video to both your host laptop as well as the external display device. Laptops which have this feature can toggle between the two modes if the appropriate key is pressed.

As for the people who bought their laptops recently, there is another technique for you. Newer laptops or even monitors make use of DVI or an HDMI connection. If your monitor has a DVI connection your laptop has a VGA connection then there is only one solution. You will have to use a converter which converts from VGA to DVI.
